Mac Arthur dreamed of a city lined with trees and flowers, and the community he founded certainly carries his vision into the modern era.
How Palm Beach Gardens Got on the Map
The city of Palm Beach Gardens was orchestrated and developed by John D. MacArthur, an insurance magnate and philanthropist. He had a vision for turning his 4,000-acre property into a suburban city that would house 55,000 people. The city was incorporated on June 20, 1959 – and one year later, MacArthur ordered an 80-year old Banyan tree to be moved by the city entrance. The tree weighed a whopping 75 tons. had a limb spread of over 125 feet and it required 1,008 hours of labor and $30,000 to move. Another 40 ton tree was also moved in order to make a grand entrance for Palm Beach Gardens. When questioned by residents why he chose to move old trees as opposed to planting new ones MacArthur responded by saying, “I can buy anything but age. This tree will be at the centerpiece of our entrance, and while we could plant a little one there, I wouldn’t be around 80 years from now to see it as it should be.”
MacArthur’s green thumbed philosophy continues today, as City Council members apply strict guidelines for landscaping, gardening, and aesthetics. Current and future developments must stay true to the vision of the garden theme imagined by its founder. The two Banyan trees still remain standing proudly at the entrance to the city of Palm Beach Gardens as a reminder to us all.
